Incidence of Deep Vein Trombosis is approximately 160 cases/100,000 inhabitants per year, and PE occurs in 60 cases/100,000 inhabitants per year. As regards complications, mortality from VTD represents 3.5% of total overall mortality and 10% of total hospital mortality, though some autopsy studies suggest that this latter figure may be substantially higher.
Up to 60% of patients undergoing orthopedic surgery would develop Deep Vein Trombosis if they did not receive prior prophylaxis.
